Jamnagar

Slightly slow start to the morning as India was playing Bangladesh in the cricket this morning. Guess who chose a restaurant table close to the TV set at breakfast time? But even Tarun realised that we did have to move so we headed off to Jamnagar. The scenery wasn't pretty but nevertheless very interesting. Gujarat has quite a bit if industry and we passed big factories, hundreds of wind turbines, and the most massive salt ponds I've ever seen.

While most of the roads were good there were some pretty rough patches and at one point we struck road works.... not a digger or bulldozer in sight but many people, mostly women, carrying stones in metal containers on their heads. In this next pic you'll see a couple of women sitting on the side of the road chipping away at the old road with a mini pick axe.

It's also quite common to see women sweeping the sides of the highways with very small brooms.

It wasn't any great surprise to find that we had a slow leak in one of the tyres due to a small nail we'd picked up somewhere. A trip to India wouldn't be complete without a trip to a garage .

This area is home to the worlds largest oil refinery. We haven't seen it yet as it's on the other side of the city... maybe tomorrow when we head to Dwarka. There is also a very big military presence, army, navy and airforce, as we are very close to Pakistan.

So yes, an interesting trip to Jamnagar which is a very old town with many decaying buildings, motor bikes, noise, cows and shoe shops. Definitely not a tourist town so there aren't any nice hotels with swimming pools like we spent the last three nights in. However, the place we are in is clean and functional if not very attractive. We even have a balcony but you need ear plugs if you go out on it.

Once we had checked in we went for a walk around the town. I've mastered the art of crossing the roads now... I almost glue myself to Tarun's side!
There seems to be an extraordinary number of cows in this town and we both got a surprise when we walked round one corner and came face to face with a big bull heading straight to a group of cows and having no regard for us or anything else he met on the way. Some of them have very very big horns!

This is a one night town... Just a stop to give Tarun a rest from driving. We have done over 2000 kms now with a lot more to come.
