Diu

No cricket this morning! Just the constant replay of past games... This is a cricket mad country. At least everyone knows New Zealand exists now!

Diu is about 11 kms long and 3 km wide so today we set off in the car to explore the island. First stop was the old Portugese Fort at the tip which dates back to the 1500's. They sure built them strong in those days.

It was quite interesting seeing Christian symbolism rather than Hindu and it almost felt like I wasn't in India. We sat on the steps watching squirrels and crabs for a while and Tarun unsuccessfully tried to lift one of the old cannons.

Inside the fort there is a jail which is currently in use but we couldn't wander around that part.

Next stop was the old Portuguese Church... a bit like the ones in Goa. It was lovely sitting there for a while as it was nice and cool.

Diu reminds me very much of Goa which also has a strong Portugese influence. The roadsides have lots of coconut palms and are quite narrow.

We are in the middle of a Hindu festival at the moment and there are quite a few temples decorated with shiny colourful flags which are very sparkly in the sun.

Mid afternoon found us back at the beach. Tarun loves the water and went swimming for quite a long time while I sat on the beach. I was joined by a couple of groups of young guys who were keen to talk to me. It's quite normal for people here to ask quite personal questions like 'how old are you' even though you have just met them.

Late afternoon and I was ready for a really big clean up in the shower while Tarun relaxed!!!

We had heard about a nice place on the island for watching sunsets so we drove to it and discovered that it was also a memorial to a ship that was sunk by the Pakistanis in 1971.

The sunset was lovely but I must admit not quite up there with the ones I saw in the  Himalayas last year.

Tarun frequently asks me if I have any wishes and most of the time I haven't as he's often pre-emptied them, but the other day I jokingly said I wished for mangoes. Unfortunately it's not mango season yet but somehow Tarun managed to find some. They also came with a mango eating lesson and now I know how to eat them without a mess... well not too much of a mess as I must admit the white hotel towel has a few yellow marks on it.

Now I'm wondering what other wishes I can dream up!!!
